The Air I Breathe

May, 2007 — Chapters 1 & 2

The following is my monthly overview and response to Louie Giglio’s book, The Air I Breath, presented 2 chapters at a time.

I love the opening line!  Oh to remember that we all worship something, whether we’re aware of it or not. I think most of us, even as Believers are at times forgetful of this fact because we usually associate worship with only singing songs on Sunday morning.  Page 13 reads, “You simply follow the trail of your time, your affection, your energy, your money, and your loyalty.  At the end of that trail you’ll find a throne; and whatever, or whomever, is on that throne is what’s of highest value to you.  On that throne is what you worship.”

And to think that God made all humans with the potential to worship, knowing many would choose to ascribe greater worth to something other than Him.  Wow!

The way life on planet earth naturally operates greatly motivates me to pursue a relationship with Him, knowing that nothing of a relational nature simply happens.  I know a relationship with God takes effort on my part because James 4:8 states we first draw near to God and then He will draw near to us.  I will never get over God’s immense patience and sadness with me when I far too often choose to replace worship of Him with worship of any and every other idol.

In Acts 17, “Paul kept describing this huge and limitless God. He said God has ‘determined’ for all human beings [the span of our lives] and [the details of our existence]…that [all people] would seek God…” Thus as we seek to draw close to Him in all of His immensity, I’m glad He reaches back. “-God constantly exposing His creative power to anyone watching.  Add to that the internal magnet [towards a Higher power] and you understand what it means when His Word says God has placed eternity in our hearts,” page 23.

As the book looks ahead towards unveiling an understandable and functional definition of worship, Louie leaves us with this encouragement:  “He’s seeking you, too, because He’s God… and he knows you can’t live without Him.  That, my friend, explains a ton of stuff for us.  For one, it explains why you worship and why you’re so good at it… And it explains why Jesus willingly came… to awaken us to the possibility of centering our worship on who and what matters most…forever,” page 28.
